What is a digital data logger?

Filed under: Tech + More — admin @ 2:39 pm

A digital data logger is a device used to sample temperature
and/or humidity and then store it electronically. It is
primarily used as a temperature monitoring device in large
freezers and/or stores.

In most cases a digital data logger needs a PC to work with
(with notable exception of ThermaViewer, that can work all by
itself).

Important factors

When you decide to buy a digital data logger, you need to think
about a few things first. As there are many data loggers
available, choosing the one that will meet all your expectations
can be a daunting task. Before you go shopping for your digital
data logger you consider the questions below.

How much data do you want to collect?

Are you going to monitor temperature for a few days, or will
this installation be more permanent and collecting temperatures
over months and years?

Where will it be placed?

Placement is a very important consideration when you buy a
digital data logger, as this has a great impact on the digital
data logger properties. For example, if it’s going to be used
for temperature monitoring in the freezer, you will need a
digital data logger that uses remote sensors. You surely won’t
be opening the freezer all the time only to check the
temperature. On the other hand if you need to monitor the room
temperature, remote sensors will be only a nice add-on.

What do you need it for?

Do you need temperature monitoring as a safety factor that will
turn on the alarm when the temperature is too high or too low?
Is it going to be a helpful, but non-vital gadget in your server
room? Answers to these questions will tell you a lot about which
digital data logger you should buy.

Cisco CCNP / BSCI Exam Tutorial: 10 ISIS Details You Must Know!

Filed under: Tech + More — admin @ 2:30 am

Earning your CCNP certification and passing the BSCI exam depends on knowing the details of many Cisco technologies, ISIS chief among them. To help you prepare for exam success, here’s a list of ISIS terminology and basic concepts that will help you pass this tough exam. Enjoy!

ISIS Terms:

Domain: section of the network under common administrative control

Area: logical segment of the network composed of contiguous routers and their data links

Intermediate System: A router.

End System: A host device.

The four levels of ISIS routing:

Level 0: ES-IS routing in the same subnet.

Level 1: IS-IS routing in the same area.

Level 2: IS-IS routing in the same domain.

Level 3: Inter-domain routing performed by InterDomain Routing Protocol (IDRP).

ISIS Adjacency Possibilities:

L1: Can form adjacency with any L1 in the same area and any L1/L2 in the same area.

L2: Can form adjacency with any L2 in any area, and with an L1/L2 in any area.

L1/L2: Can form adjacency with any L1 in the same area, L1/L2 in any area, and L2 in any area.

A router interface’s SNPA (Subnetwork Point Of Attachment) is its highest DLCI number if it’s on a Frame network, and its MAC address if the interface is on an Ethernet segment.

ISIS Hello Types:

ESH: ES Hello - Sent by End Systems to discover a router.

ISH: IS Hello - Send by Intermediate Systems to announce their presence. End Systems listen for these.

IIH: IS-to-IS Hello - Send by one IS to be heard by another IS. These hellos makes IS-IS adjacencies possible.

Best of luck on your CCNP exams!

Wireless ADHOC Networks

Filed under: Tech + More — admin @ 3:26 pm

Why and when would you want to install a wireless adhoc network? Well you would want to install a wireless Ad HoC network when you do not have the equipment for a wired network; you lack a wireless router and want to share an internet connection, or a temporary meeting place where you need to share information.

The first type of set up will be if you do have an internet connection but you lack a wireless access point or a wireless router to share that connection. This could be a very common scenario at a business meeting or during a classroom study session.

First, each computer will need a wireless adapter. Next click the advance tab near the bottom right and click (computer to computer ad-hoc networks only). Second you will need to add your ad-hoc wireless network so click add. Fill in the network name (SSID) and choose WEP encryption. You will want to use WEP if are using older adapters and use WPA if you are sure all the computers on the ad-hoc wireless network can handle it. It is not a requirement to use encryption but just remember that anyone will be able to join your network.

Because we will want everyone to share our wired Ethernet connection you will need to enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the wired network adapter not the wireless adapter. This seems like common sense but I have seen many people trying to setup ICS on their wireless adapter. Just go to your network connections and right click the Ethernet connections and press the advanced tab. Check the box that says enable ICS. Once you have setup your ICS, go to every computer and configure their wireless adapter like you did the first one.

ICS will act as a DHCP server and assign private TCP/IP address to your ad-wireless network clients. Each computer will receive a TCP/IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. ICS will also tell the computers on the network the location of their default gateway which is the computer you set up ICS on.

Trouble shooting a wireless ad-hoc network can be a head ache. Make sure you set up the ICS computer and one client computer. You will want to check to make sure that the first client computer has the correct IP address so type CMD into the run box to bring up the command line. Next, type in ipconfig, you should see a number of 192.168.0.2 or something similar. Next type ping 192.168.0.1 or the number of your default gateway. If you can ping it you should see four reply messages.

Once you have the first two computers connected correctly, just go to all the other computers and configure the wireless adapters the same way. Other common mistakes are: leaving the firewalls on, wrong encryption and just general typos.

In my next article I will describe how to set up a wireless ad-hoc network with-out a wired LAN internet connection.

Are Surf For Money Ventures For You?

Filed under: Tech + More — admin @ 6:30 pm

What Does Surf For Money Really Mean?

If you’ve been in any internet circles within the last eight years you’ve probably been approached by an eager “surfer” wanting you to register for a surf for money or surf for cash program. What exactly are those and are they profitable? Let’s see.

Basically surf for money programs are advertising programs that allow their members to participate. The member makes money by watching the advertisements in a surf rotation, and makes a commission from doing so.

In most of these programs, the member also makes an income from telling others about it, and they then can sign up, using the member’s referral link.

Do members have to actually open the advertised sites, or just watch them appear?

In some current surf for money programs, the advertised sites do not necessarily have to be viewed, however the catch is there are oftentimes sites of interest that may not be a nuisance to learn from - or be entertained by.

With more advanced scripting in use, viewers are given the option of opening any site of interest in another window while not losing their place in the site rotation so the quota for the day can be reached.

Auto-surf is a new option in some control panel menus that allow the member to “visit” websites with a new site automatically loading every 20 seconds. No clicking involved.

After the member has finished surfing, the member’s page is refreshed manually and credit is placed on his/her account. Depending on the level of investment, more or less sites must be surfed involving more or less time of the member.

Reputable surf for money or surf for cash programs disallow pornographic sites or those utilizing pop-ups or abusive language.

How is the Surf For Money Member Paid?

Often these programs use third-party gateway payment systems such as Paypal and still others use an in-house payment processor.

Additional Surf for Money Concepts

Members who have their own commercial interests to promote can also accrue advertising “credits” towards free “hits” for other surfers in the same program to visit. This allows people to
advertise their sites to an audience of potential customers for
free or at a low cost. When a site is listed, it can be placed
into a rotation system. There’s also the option to buy more credits and banner ads.

But Are Surf For Cash Programs For You?

It can’t be denied that anything associated with referral marketing has been given a bad name because of greedy administrators and even greedier users who try to spam the system in one’s favor. In fact, one popular surf for money program has been in internet news for failure to process pay-outs. (Sorry, it can’t be listed for legal reasons).

However, the concept of surf for money is solid and when properly employed can earn a member a few coins. Especially if the integrity of the company is sound - but remember that principle applies to any business venture.

The popularity and feedback from enthusiastic users of surf for money programs attests to its potential and has helped more than some meet their advertising goals. And reputable surf for cash companies allow a money back guarantee. The Terms and Conditions are to protect both parties and to ensure everyone knows what their obligations are.

So there you have it! If there’s no investment and the risk is low, perhaps surf for money is for you.
