When it comes to keeping your poker chips and adding to your chip stack, take every advantage that you can get. Even though it may seem marginal, knowing where you stand in relation to the dealer can be just such an advantage.
Since the Texas Holdem betting goes clockwise live event or online poker or otherwise, sitting just right of the dealer is a great spot, because you get to see how everyone else at the table is going to bet. This puts you in a position of power and frees you up to play a bit more aggressively if you choose to. If everyone checks, you can raise in order to weed out the weaker hands or to spice up the pot, or you can survey the betting to see if you really want to stay in the hand.
Conversely, if you’re playing poker just to the left of the dealer, you’re in a less advantageous spot. When you’re first to act, you don’t get to read the other’s reactions without them getting to see what you choose to do first. It’s a little rougher trying to get the upper hand when you have to act before everyone else.
