Employee Dies Because of Poor Equipment Maintenance

Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Ltd, of Veolia House, Pentonville Road, London was found guilty of breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work act in a case where an employee was killed on duty. The company was charged with being negligent towards the risks to health and safety of its workers.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Veolia Environmental Services in the Aylesbury Crown Court following a detailed investigation into an accident which resulted in a worker’s death.

The executive director of VES, Richard Berry, regretted the death of the 56 year old worker, David Ives from High Wycombe who was killed in May 2004, while collecting refuse, in Easington, located near Aylesbury. The accident occurred when a recycling bin fell from the bin hoist on the truck and landed on Mr Ives’ head, leading to his death. Mr Berry said that no workplace mishap can be accepted and agreed that employers have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure worker safety. He said that VES has put in investment in ensuring proper training to prevent mishaps in future.

According to the HSE investigators, the incident occurred due to a lack of proper safety precautions on part of the employers. If all the equipment had been periodically and effectively maintained and tested, the incident would not have occurred, the report revealed. As it is the responsibility of the company to prevent workplace accidents and protect workers from workplace risks, VES had overall responsibility in the case, the HSE claimed.

The company failed to ensure that there was fool proof checking of equipment to ensure complete safety while they were in use. After hearing the proceedings, the Aylesbury Crown Court held Veolia ES (UK) Ltd (previously Onyx UK Ltd) guilty and asked them to pay a fine of £130,000 and costs of £220,000.

Feedback on Managerial Abilities Helps Reduce Stress in Workplace, Says Research

According to a recent research conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and Investors in people, and funded by the HSE, stated that in cases where the employees rated the abilities of their line managers and gave them feedback, this feedback helped resolve employee employer conflict and improve workplace behaviour. The research paper was presented by the Institute at the annual conference of the Division of Occupational Behaviour of the British Psychological Society.

In this research, nearly 150 managers were asked to rate themselves while 500 employees were asked to rate their managers on their management abilities. The premise of the research was that the manager-employee relationship was the root cause of stress at workplace. After the ratings were received, the managers were divided into two groups. One group was informed about the ratings and given adequate training on how to improve their management abilities. The second group, on the other hand, was not given any feedback.

Researchers found that the managers who had received feedback went back and performed better by changing their management styles to ensure lower stress at workplace. However, the managers who did not receive any feedback went about their duties in the same manner as before. This prompted the researchers to conclude that feedback regarding management abilities and problems help in improving stressful situations at workplace.

Researchers have defined effective workplace behaviour as to include the following, namely,

Ability to manage emotions and maintain integrity

Ability to communicate and manage work in both the present and future

Displaying empathy towards team members

Managing conflict with ease

City office space rents set to rise

The cost of Central London lets for office space is set to once again rise after the two year drought of office development finally comes to an end.

Within the city prime space rents have finally settled at around £43 per sq ft and within the West End at £75 per sq ft.

Property consultancy group Cushman & Wakefield stated that over the last three months there has been an influx of new desk space London rentals that have taken up much of the available open space, which will lead to higher rents for the remaining available areas.

In fact, over the fourth quarter of 2009 over 2.6m sq ft of office space was let, which is the highest figure seen in a quarter since Q3 of 2007 over two years ago.

Despite the increase in office take-up, the amount of space that is under development in London is still about 41% less than it was a year ago.

Cushman stated that the increased pressure to secure rents had reduced the opportunity for tenants to get office space at the low level that rents have existed at throughout the recession.

Most property experts believe that rents will continue to rise although the outlook for the values of other commercial properties is not as positive. Many have fears that although prices have increased with the new flood of upcoming properties from bank sales and the Government there may be a large increase in interest rates, which will offset some of the improvement seen in the market conditions.
