Interview Advice for Job Seekers

The post interview is meant to be a conversation during which you by and large do the answering - But, you can do some of the questioning. The organization interviewing you will want to find out whether you are suitable to the position and you will want to find out if the company and post is right for you. So, do your research and gather the data you need to satisfy yourself that this placement is where you want to be working for the next few years. E.g.:

  • What will I be answerable for?
  • Where will I fit into the overall organisational structure?
  • Who will I report to?
  • Where does he/she fit in the structure?
  • Who are the people that will report to me?
  • How experienced are they?
  • What do you think would be reasonable outcomes for me to achieve in the first six months?
  • How will you measure my performance?
  • Who are your customers?
  • What are the unit’s plans for development?
  • What are the chances of advancement/promotion in this position? What would be a reasonable timescale in which to expect this?
  • What is the nature of the payment system here? [Do not bring this up too early in the post interview - wait until they are sold on you.]
  • How much travelling is needed in this post?
  • Will relocation be required now or in the future?
  • What are the training opportunities here?
  • What are the next steps for the recruitment process?
  • What is the next step?
